WHO:
55,698 (2011 census) individuals with intellectual disabilities participate in programs provided by Special Olympics New York.

WHAT:
Through sports training and competition, Special Olympics New York offers continuing opportunities for our athletes to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience the joy of achievement, and make new friends.

WHERE:
Athletes train and compete in nine regions across New York State with a network of over Untitled Document 31,486 dedicated volunteers, including more than 4,366 certified coaches.

WHEN:
Special Olympics New York offers a statewide, three season program that provides 4,792 competitive and fundraising opportunities and experiences annually.

HOW:
Special Olympics New York achieves its goals through quality sports training in Untitled Document 22 Olympic-style sports. Athletes can advance from local events to regional, state, national, and even international competitions.

WHY:
Our mission is to contribute to the development of the physical and social skills of people with intellectual disabilities. Further, our programs strengthen families and unite the community in understanding that people with intellectual disabilities can prosper in an environment of equality, respect, and acceptance.

Special Olympics New York was organized by Dorothy Buehring Phillips in 1969. Since that time, the organization has grown to become one of the largest sports programs for individuals with intellectual disabilities in the United States.
