Through the five-year New York City Project, Special Olympics will develop and deliver innovative programs in New York City that accelerate growth, increase awareness and enhance overall effectiveness .

The Special Olympics athlete population in the city has grown from 20,000 in 2005 to 23,000 in just one year. The project's goal is to see the number of athletes double to 40,000 by the year 2010. Buoyed by tailored marketing and promotional campaigns, the project will lead not only to program growth but also to changed attitudes throughout the city's population . It will also provide a meaningful environment for New Yorkers to give back through volunteerism. This entire effort will burnish New York City 's reputation for forward-thinking leadership and active citizenship, and the city will become a role model in Special Olympics' mission to improve the lives of people with intellectual disabilities and transform communities .

In the next several years, Special Olympics plans to launch initiatives in several other North American cities in order to build, strengthen and enhance its programs in those areas. Special Olympics will work with each of these areas to develop specialized models, and then share and replicate them as appropriate in municipalities throughout North America .

With each step in this urban strategy we will learn how Special Olympics can be optimally effective in cities everywhere — not just in North America but, ultimately, around the world. New York City , as it so often is, will have been the leader.
